WHAT IS OSTEOPATHIC
TREATMENT

As a manual therapist thinking as an Osteopath, my clinical delivery offered to patients is always drawn from medical research which is r evidenced-based and always applied within the context of my own 46 years of practice-based experience.

Osteopathy is very much a way of thinking and how best to develop and apply treatment strategies. This starts when listening to the patient’s storey followed by the clinical examination of the patient.

At the beginning of every subsequent visit you will be re-examined to assess improvement or otherwise. Through discussion with each patient, the osteopath will create a treatment strategy specifically for that patient.
Actual treatment centre’s around applying manual therapy (the osteopath using his/her hands) to aid the improvement of soft tissue function and tone, improve joint function, restore postural balance where it has been diminished.
In particular, scientific research strongly suggests it is important to improve each patient’s understanding of their problem.

I often say to patients, “it is one thing to get you better but can be a further problem to keep you better”. By receiving a rational and honest explanation as to why they have the problem, patients can identify their own role in contributing to successful initial treatment and subsequent self care.
